Spontaneously enigmatic, Raptor is crazy. We're not kidding, either, this guy is right up there with the mad hatter. He stands in places backwards, tips over his food dish and then tries to eat out of it by sneaking his tongue under the corner, backs up side arc circles, and does the opposite of what we ask him. He frequently bumps into a fence (or tree, or wall) over and over and over and over again methodically, as if expecting the outcome to be different. We've quickly learned to tell him to stop will make him go, and vice versa. Thusly, training with him is quite the experience. During gating he must be backed towards the gate, with which he responds by backing up in an arc and then going into the chute. If we were try to and walk him in straight, he'd back up around and back into it instead. Tor needs his own cheat sheet operations manual. To go left you must cue him right, to use the crop on him you must tap his shoulder, not his rump.
We've tried to convince the vet to x-ray his head and see if somehow his right brain got swapped with his left like some sort of Frankenstein creature. Due to his topsy-turvy nature, Tor needs to stay at the front of his races, as he's too crazy minded to run very well alongside his competitors for long. He's a big guy, but he doesn't really have too many buttons except stop and go (backwardly, of course) so keeping him to sprints and miles will be our main goal. The less time he has to goof something up the better we think he'll run. At least we've managed to get him to run in a straight line, at first he zig zagged every which way until we learned how he ticks. Raptor is terribly interested in everything, he is distracted by anything and everything. Its extraordinarily easy to keep him occupied, even if he doesn't have a great attention span, as long as there is a variety of things around him he'll stay mentally stimulated forever. This boy can find fascination in a rock, so keeping his energy going on race days is simple. So fascinated by all the sights, sounds, and smells, he is full of energy by the time those gates open up. Tor eats enormous amounts of food, he's a bottomless pit, and what else can you say to a colt who is wiggling and running day and night except 'eat up'! |
