Silent Scream is not a very nice colt. He's never in a good mood, his knickers are always in a twist. He seems to forever be in a hurry over things. He rushes to go outside, to get into his stall, to get on the track, you name it. Pushy and overbearing, he needs a firm hand, and does not respect women at all. We're not entirely sure why, he will bully small men as well, so it's not easy pairing him with a jockey who he will listen to. Being extremely large himself, it's not easy for our grooms and handlers to get him to behave. Kingsley certainly wants to be king, and he commands a solo pasture, as he rushes at and kicks out at anybody who shares his royal grass. There is one goat from a neighbour's farm we've ended up purchasing to be his companion, as we found the little nipper chowing down next to the big colt one morning. It seems the goat didn't back down from Kingsley, and give him quite a braying headbutt if the massive guy issues him a challenge. We think this colt responds and respects very abrasive and tough temperaments. As best we can describe it, you can get his attention and perhaps a few minutes of his time, if you do anything that prompts the response of "them's fightin' words".
Naturally Silent Scream is not particularly a joy on racing day behind the scenes. He is not a crowd favourite, and nearly needs a muzzle to prevent him removing chunks of flesh from bystanders who aren't paying attention. He is extraordinarily frustrated with waiting and stopping, so there is no way this big guy could ever conserve enough energy for long marathons. He's too fidgety and uses up too much energy before the race. It takes a great many people to shove him into the gate, but it takes no effort to urge him out. He runs like his tail is on fire, and his jockey works very hard to keep him off the lead, so his momentum keeps up during the race. We think he'll really love the mile distance in particular, but a touch shorter may also be the name of his game. He thrives with competition, but in case he is forced to take the lead, he'll still maintain a good clip so long as there are horses at his heels. His nightmare will be a field of sluggish closers who don't threaten him until the end, but we'll try and make sure he still puts up one heck of a fight if he meets that circumstance. |
