To put it bluntly, The Goblin is not a pretty horse. In fact, he's downright ugly - both in looks and personality. He's a nasty piece of work that is always picking fights. Goblin will bully the meeker horses and challenge the bolder ones, seemingly thinking that he's indestructible. That isn't true though and, from time to time, he will target somebody even nastier than himself. This kind of foolish behaviour is exactly how he found himself losing half an ear.
Goblin had been allowed to get a little too close to Nuclear Fallout. He had started up his usual behaviour - trying to pick a fight that he was confident that he could win. Goblin had failed to predict Fallout's unpredictable and unhinged nature, though. The ensuing fight had been violent and neither horse had come out unharmed. Though Fallout managed to escape with only a couple of scars, Goblin had been dealt a far greater wound; half of his right ear partly ripped from his body. It hadn't been completely torn off, but there had been no saving it and a good chunk of the top of it had to be surgically removed. But he never learnt his lesson. The Goblin continued to be horrible and violent, his reputation for terrorising anything that gets in his way preceding him. Even other stables seem to know of his fondness for getting into fights now - one person once commenting to Arthur that he had heard he'd 'picked up a horse that likes to eat the flesh of his enemies'. On the track, it is unsurprising that The Goblin is highly competitive and eager to challenge others. He can run anywhere in the pack providing he had one thing: a horse to duel. He'll quickly pick out the horse that he considers to be his biggest threat and will spend the start of the race challenging them only. It doesn't matter if they don't take the bait; the fight in his head is enough to keep him going. Then, when his jockey spurs him on, he'll burst forth and and give his all in defeating them - speeding past his rival and, invigorated by his 'victory', continuing to push on faster and faster, until he is in the lead and everybody else is in the dust behind him. |
